Socket Drive Size Guide
The drive size is the square connection between a ratchet and socket. It does not tell you the size of the hex opening that fits the fastener. Pick a socket opening for the head first, then choose a compatible drive for the space and job.

Choose a drive
Typical socket-set ranges below are real examples, not fixed limits of a drive size. Sets vary by brand and purpose.

The ranges are drawn from published TEKTON socket sets. A specific set may have fewer sizes, and overlapping socket openings across drive sizes are normal.

How each drive feels in use
Fits into tighter areas and pairs well with small sockets. Use it for light, small fasteners; avoid adding a cheater bar to a small ratchet.
A useful default for routine hand-tool work. It covers many socket sizes and works where a 1/2 in. setup is too bulky.
Common for larger sockets and torque wrenches used on wheels and chassis work. Follow the vehicle’s specified torque and use a properly rated tool.
For an impact wrench, choose sockets and accessories explicitly rated for impact use. Ratchet drive size alone does not determine a tool’s torque rating; check the manufacturer’s rating and the application.

These larger square-drive sizes appear on tools and sockets for heavy-duty truck, industrial and equipment work. For example, a published 3/4 in. drive impact set covers 3/4–2 in. hex openings. Match the tool, socket, adapter and fastener to the required load, and follow equipment specifications.
